Description
Hattie E. Field, age 9, lies in rest beneath this cracked headstone at Union Cemetery in Southport, Maine
On August 15th, 1879 Hattie Westman, her brother-in-law William Field, and his young daughter (also named Hattie), set off on William's yacht on their way from Southport Island, Maine, to Bath. Just past Upper Hell Gate in Back River, they were caught between the wake of two steamers, and the boat went down in about twenty feet of water. None survived.
This cracked and weathered tombstone has marked the grave of 9-year old Hattie E. Fields for nearly a century and a half. Fallen autumn leaves are scattered in the grass at the foot of the gravestone at Union Cemetery in Southport, Maine. This spooky black and white image was created on an October afternoon just a few weeks before Halloween.
