Description
For 15,000 years, water has dropped over Mulnomah Falls and into the Columbia River Gorge. For just over the last 100 of those years, Benson Bridge has been an iconic addition to the scenery.
The 45-foot reinforced concrete deck arch bridge was the idea of Samuel Lancaster, lead engineer and architect for the Columbia River Highway. He and landowner Simon Benson were at the falls when Lancaster suggested the footbridge so that visitors could enjoy views of the upper falls and without moving look down at the pool and lower falls below. Benson agreed and cut a check on the spot for the estimated cost.
Simon Benson eventually purchased nearly 1,000 acres of land along the Columbia River, which he donated to Portland for a park. His namesake Benson Bridge is an iconic focal point which is as much identified with Multnomah Falls as the falls themselves.
