Description
Margerie Glacier is at the end of the Tarr Inlet of Glacier Bay. It is about one mile wide where it meets the ocean, and rises 250 feet above the waterline.
Believe it or not, the U.S. Geological Survey considers glacier ice a type of metamorphic rock. Rocks are made up of one or more minerals, and since ice is an inorganic substance which has a definite chemical composition and fixed crystal structure, it is defined as a mineral. Glacier ice is formed when the pressure of snow above causes the snowflakes below to recrystallize into larger and denser denser ice crystals, hence metamorphic rock.
